Facing your fears” The Bradford Rainbow Club Q&A Group Session on Zoom 25/08/2020.
Jon (Home Office)
The Q&A Session with Jon The Home Office Representative for me was introspective. Jon answered and annihilated all the misinformation I had heard from advisors of asylum seekers’ Charities and those who are now Refugees. Like any public servant the Home Office can be scrutinised but along the way what is forgotten sometimes is their tireless work in service to asylum seekers entering the UK as well giving the tools on integrating into British Society.
Jon made it very clear that they will not always get it right in some asylum cases however they do they work hard and diligently to correct their mistakes. Having been in the asylum process for the last six years I have learnt through conversations with Home Office Representatives that transparency is a must.
Jon solidified that by being transparent in the Q&A session in addition humanising the Home Office. For too long now there has been this stigma of fear when dealing with the Home Office. He was patient direct and most of all informative to all questions from our group members.
As I expected there were a few questions he could not answer in detail. The Home Office is immense in size and Jon would not be privy to all mandates temporary or new. Having an open and transparent interaction with Jon from the Home Office confirmed for me the need in having more dialogue such as this and I look forward hopefully that we keep having conversations and have another opportunity to engage with the Home Office without a blanketed cover of misguided fear as it only deteriorates the relationship between us asylum seekers and the Home Office.
